What happened
The metals/jewelry program appears to have been discontinued as a standalone concentration. The archived directory listed Richard Mafong as faculty "to present," but Georgia State's own current records (e.g., a Digital Library of Georgia archival entry) describe him as a "former" GSU professor, indicating he has left/retired. The school awarded a BFA in "Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing" as recently as 1997 (a documented graduate studied under Mafong), confirming the program once existed. Today the Welch School lists nine studio concentrations and none is jewelry or metals, so the dedicated program no longer exists as a degree path. A metal shop/iron forge still exists within the Sculpture facilities, and some jewelry-related coursework may persist, but there is no jewelry/metals concentration or degree. The exact closure date and whether it formally merged into Sculpture could not be confirmed from available sources.
