What happened
The institution itself was renamed, not the program. Western Maryland College officially became McDaniel College on July 1, 2002 (announced January 2002), honoring alumnus William Roberts McDaniel — the original name had caused confusion (students mistook it for a public satellite campus in rural western Maryland) and the namesake railroad had long since merged away. This predates the directory's ~2014 offline window, so the directory listing under the old name was already obsolete. As of 2026 the Art Department remains active and continues to offer metalsmithing/jewelry as a studio discipline (jewelry studio + ART 2214 course), so the metals offering was a continuation, not a closure. No metals-specific closure was found; current art chair is Steven Pearson.
