Winthrop University — Department of Fine Arts (Studio Art), College of Visual and Performing Arts

What happened
"Winthrop College" became Winthrop University in 1992 (university status); the directory record predates the rename. The metals/jewelry offering was not closed — it persists as a course/subject area within the Studio Art program. There is an active metals/jewelry faculty member (Anne Fiala) whose stated focus includes metalsmithing, jewelry design, and computer-aided design (CAD), so the program's CAD/CAM-adjacent instruction continues. Department leadership has changed over the period: a 2018 university news item announced Karen Oremus as incoming Fine Arts chair; the current Fine Arts faculty/staff page lists Mark Hamilton as Chair.
