Class authorization

A class finishes its machine unit; the instructor certifies the whole roster at once. Uncheck anyone who missed the day.

Machines & tiers

Tier 1 is open after orientation. Tier 2 needs a class or a one-on-one checkout. Tier 3 needs the checkout and a second person in line of sight.

Safe use kiosk

The placards, as a page for the open shop computers by the tool crib. No login. Setup, operation, and the checkout rubric for every machine.

Shop rules

  • Nothing in your ears. No earbuds, no headphones. You need to hear a blade chatter or stock bind.
  • Natural fibers. Cotton, canvas, denim, wool. Synthetics melt onto skin.
  • Eyes and ears. ANSI Z87.1 glasses always; hearing protection on anything with a motor.
  • No gloves on rotating equipment. A cutter that snags a glove takes the hand with it.
  • Tier 3 needs a second person. Table saw, radial arm saw, router table, CNC. Someone in sight and earshot, every time.

Cards & interlocks

What it takes to go from a card swipe at the desk to a machine that will not start for the wrong student.

An interlock is not an emergency stop. It gates the low-voltage control coil of the machine's magnetic starter. SawStop cartridges, thermal cutouts, guard microswitches, and the slap-button E-stop stay hardwired in series and de-energize the machine regardless of what the software thinks.

Turnkey: Fabman Bridge

A small box on the machine with a 13.56 MHz reader, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and a dry-contact relay. Tap a badge; a server authorizes the switch. A current sensor logs run time and enforces a deadman timeout.

DIY: ESP32 relay node

An ESP32 with an RC522 or Wiegand reader driving a 30 A contactor, around $80 in parts. It would ask a small local service whether this card is cleared on this machine, and keep an allowlist in flash for when the network is down.

What the desk already does

  • USB card readers. Any RFID or magstripe reader in keyboard-wedge mode types the card into the search box; the desk recognizes the burst and pulls the student up.
  • Card UID on every record. Each student carries a cardUid in the campus format, the key an interlock would look up.
  • A JSON export. The roster leaves as a file, which is what a local authorization service would read.

Storage & backup

The roster lives in this browser and nowhere else. Export it to a file now and then.
