What happened
Continuation with significant generational faculty turnover since the ~2014 archived record. The archived faculty (Carlyle Smith, Klaus Kallenberger, Robert Montgomery, Olli Valanne, Jon Havener) reflect the program's mid-20th-century lineage; Carlyle Smith founded it in 1947. By the mid-2010s the active faculty were Jon Havener, Lin Stanionis and Gina Westergard (a 2019 Kansan article still lists those three). As of the 2026-27 catalog the area is staffed by Gina Westergard (continuing), plus newer hires Sunyoung Cheong and lecturer Erick Morales Scholz; Havener and Stanionis are no longer listed (retired/emeritus). The program added a robust Digital Fabrication Studio (Rhino/Matrix CAD, 5-axis CNC, resin 3D printing), reflecting a clear CAD-CAM pivot. No closure, merger or rename — the program remains a named concentration within the Department of Visual Art.
