Medium

The medium can be defined in any way that’s useful in the breaking down and understanding of its nature and effects. The wheel extends the foot and arms, as well as the bucket — which extends the hands. The barrow is then extended by the multi-wheeled cart. The carriage took their place, then the car, then the eighteen wheeler. The swim becomes the boat, the aircraft, the carrier and then the rocket. Each is category and contents — multiplying the ability to carry a thing from one place to another. They are generalized media — as are the earth, water and space they move through. Each is also a tool, something designed or used to accomplish particular purposes — to stack up money, for sex and companionship and to lock these things behind bullets. Media are platforms, enabling industries, building systems, defining space. The thing that travels has things traveling through it.
