The 'Cuda is the high-performance variant of the 1970 E-body Barracuda — a complete reskin of the prior Barracuda on the new E-platform shared with the Dodge Challenger. BS23 = hardtop, BS27 = convertible, BS29 = the Hemi 'Cuda body code (also used as the AAR overlay carrier). 1970 'Cuda came with the 340-LA small-block four-barrel as standard performance equipment; the option sheet ran up through the 383 N-code, 440 U-code, 440 Six Barrel V-code, and 426 Hemi R-code.
Designer — John E. Herlitz (1942–2008) led the styling of the third-generation Barracuda. Hired into Chrysler's design office in 1964 out of Pratt Institute, Herlitz spent his career at the company, eventually becoming Vice President of Design. Beyond the 1970 'Cuda his credits include the Dodge Copperhead concept (1997) and contributions across the 1990s-era Plymouth lineup. The 1970 Barracuda program also drew on John Samsen for refinement of the front and rear ends; Coke-bottle side contours and a cleanly horizontal beltline are the body's defining lines.
Production was small relative to total Barracuda volume — collectors track 'Cuda hardtops and 'Cuda convertibles separately, with the Hemi 'Cuda configurations standing apart again. Galen Govier's tables remain the registry-attested baseline for 'Cuda per-engine production.
