Y82 — 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am (1989) / Formula appearance package (1985–86)

Indy 500 pace-car edition (1989). 3.8L turbo V6 derived from the Buick Grand National powertrain, automatic only, white paint, tan leather. ≈1,555 built per the Trans Am 20th Anniversary registry.

Y82 is the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am — built to commemorate the Trans Am's 1969 introduction and to serve as the Indianapolis 500 pace car for that year. The engine is the 3.8-litre turbocharged V6 from the Buick Grand National / GNX powertrain. Per Wikipedia, the F-body installation re-engineered the cylinder heads with 8:1 compression (vs. the G-body GNX's 9:1) because the F-body had less under-hood clearance, and the turbocharger components were upgraded to provide 16 psi of boost (vs. 14 psi on the GNX). The official rating was 250 hp / 340 lb-ft, though dyno tests of the Anniversary cars regularly cleared 300 hp — one of the more famously underrated Pontiac power figures. The transmission is the Hydra-Matic 200-4R automatic; no manual was offered. All cars are white over tan leather, with cross-lace 16-inch wheels and a discreet Twentieth Anniversary badge on the rear deck.

Total production: approximately 1,555 cars per the Trans Am 20th Anniversary registry. Wikipedia does not directly confirm a production number for this edition; the 1,555 figure should be treated as registry-attested rather than factory-documented. Each car carries the Y82 callout in the SPID label option block. Plenum decodes the SPID fully and flags any callout that diverges from the registry's per-VIN expectations.

Note on RPO Y82: on 1985–86 third-gen builds the same RPO Y82 designated the Formula appearance package — a different car entirely. Plenum disambiguates by model year before reading the package.
