Color anodize (dyed Type II)

anodize · colored · dyed color anodize, red anodize, blue anodize, gold anodize

Aluminum that's been bath-grown an oxide skin and dyed before sealing. Reds, blues, greens, golds — saturated where the part stays out of UV, gentler outdoors. Anodized iPods, brand-color bicycle stems, ano-jewelry, the colored bezel on a chronograph.

Type II Class 2 per MIL-A-8625 dyed in the same dye-immersion + nickel-seal sequence as black anodize. Color comes from the dye, not the metal — the 1–25 µm oxide layer is colorless. UV-stability ranges widely: Sandoz Sanodal Deep Red and Clariant Anaplast Bright Blue hold their color for years outdoors; cheap dyes drift in months. Light alloys (6061 / 6063) dye most uniformly; copper-rich alloys streak. Hard-anodized (Type III, see hardcoat) takes color too but reads darker because the thicker oxide tints down to bronze.

character — saturated when fresh, slightly satin (substrate-dependent), warm-cool depending on hue and seal chemistry.

Incompatibilities

  • long outdoor UV without color-fast dye selection
  • high-copper aluminum alloys (2024 / 7075) for uniform color

Second life

reversibilitymoderate — the oxide layer can be stripped chemically (NaOH bath) and re-anodized. Color is permanent unless stripped; reversal requires controlled chemistry.
blocks substrate recyclingno
renewabilityshop-renewable — strip and re-anodize at any anodizing-shop with the matching color bath. Field-renewability is zero (you cannot anodize on a job site).
