SPI A3 (mirror polish, #6 diamond)

mold_finish · mirror · SPI A-3, general mirror mold finish

The coarsest of the SPI mirror grades — #6 grade diamond paste, Ra ~0.1 µm. Reads mirror to the eye, but can show fine swirl under raking light. The economy mirror — sufficient for opaque parts that want the gloss; the mirror that lets the cosmetic-resin color carry the page.

SPI / SPE finish A3 — diamond-paste polish using #6 grade (3–6 µm) on hardened tool steel. Surface roughness Ra ~0.075–0.1 µm. Reads mirror to the unaided eye on opaque resin; transparent resin will show very fine micro-swirl in raking light or transmission. Lower mold cost than A1 / A2 (less labor in the polish stage). Common spec for opaque PC, PC-ABS, and ABS housings where the mirror is the cosmetic register but optical performance is not required.

character — mirror to the eye, opaque-resin friendly, economy-grade premium finish.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the molded part — the mold-cavity surface is transferred at the moment of forming and cannot be undone without re-molding from a different cavity.

renewabilityzero on the existing part; the mold cavity itself can be re-polished or re-textured by the toolmaker for subsequent runs.
