SPI B3 (coarse paper polish, 320-grit)

mold_finish · polished · SPI B-3, lower-cost semi-gloss mold finish

The coarsest of the SPI paper-polish grades — 320-grit. Reads slightly more matte than B1 / B2, more cost-effective on the tool. The economy semi-gloss for inside-the-housing parts, structural elements, secondary cosmetic surfaces.

SPI / SPE finish B3 — 320-grit emery paper polish on tool-steel cavity. Surface roughness Ra ~0.4 µm. Distinguishes from C1 (600-grit oilstone, also Ra ~0.4) by polish-direction character — paper polish gives a softer broken sheen than stone polish at the same Ra. Most economical SPI B grade; common spec for hidden interior parts, structural ribs, packaging interior shells.

character — low semi-gloss, economy mold spec, hidden-surface tier.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the molded part — the mold-cavity surface is transferred at the moment of forming and cannot be undone without re-molding from a different cavity.

renewabilityzero on the existing part; the mold cavity itself can be re-polished or re-textured by the toolmaker for subsequent runs.
