SPI D2 (medium dry blast, #240 oxide)

mold_finish · textured · SPI D-2, medium-textured mold finish

Mold cavity blasted with #240 aluminum-oxide media — coarser than D1 (#11 glass bead). Reads as a deeper-textured matte on the molded part, hides every cosmetic defect, the texture for parts whose substrate has knit lines / surface defects you simply don't want to see.

SPI / SPE finish D2 — dry blast with #240 aluminum-oxide media on tool-steel cavity. Surface roughness Ra ~1.0 µm (vs. D1 ~0.8 µm). The aluminum oxide cuts more aggressively than glass bead, giving sharper micro-peaks and slightly more open texture. Standard spec for industrial parts, equipment housings, hidden structural plastics where the cosmetic register doesn't matter and the texture is the cheapest defect-hiding option.

character — deeper matte texture, fully diffuse, defect-hiding industrial register.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the molded part — the mold-cavity surface is transferred at the moment of forming and cannot be undone without re-molding from a different cavity.
blocks substrate recyclingno
renewabilityzero on the existing part; the mold cavity itself can be re-polished or re-textured by the toolmaker for subsequent runs.
