Salt-finished concrete

stone_finish · textured · rock-salt finish, salt-textured concrete, salt washed

Coarse rock salt scattered over wet concrete and pressed in; once cured, the slab is rinsed and the salt dissolves out, leaving a uniform pitted surface. Reads as soft, irregular, slightly archaic. Pool decks, patio surrounds, walkways where slip-resistance and visual texture both matter.

After the final float, coarse rock salt (3–10 mm crystals) is broadcast across the surface and pressed in with a roller. Concrete is allowed to set; once hard, surface is wet-rinsed and the salt dissolves out, leaving 2–5 mm-deep pits where each crystal sat. Slip-resistance R-10 to R-11. Cost slightly higher than broom-finish (extra material + extra step), lower than exposed aggregate. Common on swimming-pool decks, garden patios, mid-tier residential walkways. Avoid in freeze-thaw climates without sealer — pitted surface holds water.

character — irregular pitted texture, soft archaic register, slip-resistant.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the existing stone — texture is geometric, present in the substrate. Re-finishing requires removing material to reach a different finish.

renewabilitymoderate — most stone finishes can be re-applied (re-honing, re-flaming) at the cost of minor material loss; field-renewability for indoor surfaces, shop-renewability for outdoor.
