Hard wax oil (Osmo / Rubio Monocoat)

coating · satin · Osmo Polyx, Rubio Monocoat, hard wax oil, hardwax-oil hybrid

A modern hybrid wood finish — drying oils blended with hard waxes — that penetrates like an oil and surface-protects like a wax. One or two coats typical (Rubio's signature is 'one coat, one component'); cure to a low-sheen satin that hand-feels like the wood. Standard floor finish on European hardwood, contemporary American studio furniture since the 2010s.

Blend of natural drying oils (linseed, sunflower, soy) and hard waxes (carnauba, candelilla) in low-VOC solvent or solvent-free formulation. Penetrates the surface fibers (oil component); leaves a 5–15 µm wax-rich micro-film on top. Cure: oxidative polymerization 24–72 hr, full hardness 7–10 days. Single-coat application typical (Rubio Monocoat — proprietary one-coat technology) or two thin applications (Osmo Polyx-Oil). Refinishable in place — clean, recoat the worn area. Color tints possible without separate stain step. Lower-VOC than oil-modified urethane; matte / satin only (no high-gloss). Standard for European hardwood floors and modern studio-furniture work that wants the hand-feel of oil with the durability of a thin wax film.

character — low satin, hand-feels like raw wood, single-coat application, refinish-in-place register.

Second life

reversibilitymoderate — most coatings can be stripped chemically (methylene chloride for paint, NaOH for some powder coats) or thermally / mechanically (sandblasting). Some specialty coatings (DLC, ceramic) require commercial-service strip.
