SPI A1 (highest mirror polish, #1 diamond)

mold_finish · mirror · SPI A-1, optical mold finish, lens-grade polish

The finest SPI mold-cavity polish — #1 grade diamond paste, Ra ≤ 0.025 µm. Lens-quality. The injection-molded part is optically transparent in clear resin, indistinguishable from a polished glass surface. Lens covers, optical clarity windows, the inside of a high-end clear bottle.

Society of the Plastics Industry / SPE finish A1 — diamond-paste polish using #1 grade (1 µm and below) on a hard tool steel cavity (P20 hardened to RC 38–42, or H13 / S7 fully hardened). Surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.025 µm. Most expensive SPI grade — labor-intensive hand polishing through diamond grades, no shortcuts. Distinguishes from A2 (#3 diamond, ~0.05 µm Ra) by perceptible-only-under-microscope improvement; perceptible-by-eye in transparent resins where any micro-pit reads as a haze in transmission.

character — lens-grade optical, transparent in clear resin reads glass-equivalent, premium spec.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the molded part — the mold-cavity surface is transferred at the moment of forming and cannot be undone without re-molding from a different cavity.
blocks substrate recyclingno
renewabilityzero on the existing part; the mold cavity itself can be re-polished or re-textured by the toolmaker for subsequent runs.
