Mold texture — leather grain

texture · textured · MT-11020 / MT-11030 leather analog, VDI 3400 ref 36–40, SPI texture leather

A photo-etched or laser-etched texture on the inside of an injection mold, transferred onto the molded part. The leather-grain analog reads soft, hides flow lines, hides parting lines. Automotive interior trim, electronics enclosures, the dash of a 1990s car.

Texture cut into the mold cavity by photochemical etch (Mold-Tech / Eschmann process — masking film printed from a master pattern, acid-etched into hardened tool steel) or laser texture. Industry references: Mold-Tech MT-11020 (fine), MT-11030 (medium), MT-11040 (coarse) all leather-analog grains; VDI 3400 reference plates 36–40 cover similar depth (12.5–18 µm Ra). Released by ~5° draft increase per side beyond minimum. Hides flow lines, witness marks, sink. The studio-default texture on consumer-electronics housings before matte powder coat became cheap on metal.

character — natural-grain analog, soft hand, fingerprint-tolerant, the studio-default ABS / PC-ABS texture.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the textured surface — texture is in the substrate. Removable only by additional material removal or by overcoating to fill the texture.
blocks substrate recyclingno
renewabilitymoderate — re-texturing is possible at the cost of removing the original texture and any material below it. Sandblast and acid-etch textures can be re-applied by repeating the original process.
