Mold texture — sand grain

texture · textured · MT-11020 sand, MT sandstone analog, VDI 3400 ref 36–40 sand

A mold-side texture that mimics fine sandcasting or sandstone — irregular, slightly directional, soft. Reads as suggestive of cast aluminum or as cast bronze, even when the part is injection-molded ABS. Studio-design plastic that wants to read 'cast not molded.'

Photochemical / laser-etched mold cavity in the sand family — Mold-Tech MT-11020 sand variant (Ra 8–14 µm), VDI 3400 plates 36–40. Distinguishes from leather grain (which has a regular pebble pattern) by the irregular, slightly fractal sand-like distribution. Common on consumer-product housings going for a cast-metal look — speakers, cookware handles, faux-bronze hardware. Pairs with the textured plastics injection-molding process (proc_injection_molding_textured_grain) and with matte resin formulations.

character — irregular sand-like texture, slightly directional, evokes cast metal even on plastic.

Second life

reversibilityzero on the textured surface — texture is in the substrate. Removable only by additional material removal or by overcoating to fill the texture.

renewabilitymoderate — re-texturing is possible at the cost of removing the original texture and any material below it. Sandblast and acid-etch textures can be re-applied by repeating the original process.
