Signet Ring

A ring with a flat or shaped face, traditionally engraved with a family crest, monogram, or seal. The sealing function predates writing — Sumerian cylinder seals, Egyptian cartouche rings, Roman intaglio rings — and the ring as a symbol of identity outlived the actual sealing function by centuries. Contemporary signet rings carry the same form without the same use, and have come back into fashion cycles steadily since the 2010s.
