Riveting

joining · solid riveting, blind riveting, pop rivet, rivnut, structural blind rivet

A short metal pin gets pushed through holes in two parts, then the back end is squashed or pulled to lock them together. Mechanical, removable-ish, no heat. The way airplane skins are joined to airframes, the way leather goods get hardware, the way a Boris Bally chair is held together.

Mechanical fastener forming process. Solid rivets require access to both sides; blind rivets (pop rivets) form on one side via a mandrel pulled through the rivet body. Structural blind rivets (Avdel, Huck) develop high shear and tensile strength comparable to bolted joints. Rivnuts add a threaded blind insert.

Trade-offs

constraints · what is lost · what is gained
Aluminum 5052
  • constraints
    • joint must allow access for the rivet + setting tool from at least one side
    • edge distance ≥ 2× rivet diameter to prevent edge tear-out
    • rivet length must equal grip + ~1.5× diameter for clean head formation
  • what is lost
    • rivet heads are visible from the assembly side — feature for industrial / aircraft / hardgoods register, defect for consumer-luxury
    • misaligned holes show as off-axis rivet heads
  • what is gained
    • non-destructive disassembly (drill out and re-rivet)
    • joins materials that cannot be welded (aluminum to composite, steel to polymer)
    • aircraft-skin lineage — Boeing 747 has ~3M rivets; A380 has ~4M

Plain language. Neutral framing — perfection is contextual, defined by use. Cf. Winchester, The Perfectionists (HarperCollins, 2018).

Second life

reversibilitymoderate — solid rivets can be drilled out; blind rivets the same. Rivet-replacement is routine in aircraft maintenance.
output recyclabilityyes
waste streams
  • rivet stem scrap (blind rivets — recyclable as steel scrap)
  • drilled-rivet body scrap
  • lubricant residue from setting tools
