Brooch / Pin

A surface-mounted ornament fastened to clothing with a pin or clip. The form most contemporary studio art-jewelry takes — the brooch's lack of structural constraint (no finger to fit, no wrist to wrap) gives the medium room for sculptural ambition that rings and bracelets don't. Common across silver, base-metal-and-enamel work, and mixed-media art jewelry, with stone-set fine-jewelry brooches (the Cartier panther and its peers) at the high end.

mechanical

  • pin-back fastener strength
  • stable fold-and-clip mechanism (rotating C-clasp typical)
  • weight balance — heavy brooches sag fabric

environmental

  • skin-contact biocompatibility on the backside hardware
  • tarnish-resistance on display side

regulatory

  • FTC Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metal, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR 23)
