Polyurethane varnish

coating · polished · poly, PU varnish, Minwax Polyurethane, exterior poly, marine varnish

A clear polyurethane film applied over wood — gloss / satin / matte sheens, oil-based or water-based, brushed or sprayed. The modern alternative to varnish: tougher, more chemical-resistant, less yellowing in the water-based formulations. Standard floor finish, kitchen-table top, exterior boat brightwork. Reads as built-up over the wood rather than into it.

Polyurethane resin in solvent (oil-based: mineral spirits + alkyd-modified PU; water-based: water + acrylic-PU dispersion). Cures by oxygen-uptake (oil-based, 8–24 hr per coat) or water evaporation + crosslinking (water-based, 2–4 hr per coat). 3–4 coats typical, 240-grit between coats. Dry film 50–150 µm. Oil-based ambers wood with age, water-based stays clear. Marine spar varnish is the long-oil PU formulation tuned for outdoor flex and UV; floor PU is the higher-solids quick-cure variant. Dries clear, abrasion-resistant, alcohol- and water-resistant. Can't be re-padded like shellac — repair requires sanding the damage out.

character — built-up film over wood, glassy to satin per spec, water-resistant, modern-floor register.

Second life

reversibilitymoderate — most coatings can be stripped chemically (methylene chloride for paint, NaOH for some powder coats) or thermally / mechanically (sandblasting). Some specialty coatings (DLC, ceramic) require commercial-service strip.
