PVD ZrN (pale gold / champagne)

plate · polished · zirconium nitride, ZrN PVD, champagne gold PVD

Zirconium nitride PVD — a paler, cooler gold than TiN, approaching white-gold or champagne. Watch bezels, jewelry, eyeglass frames where the warm-gold of TiN reads dated. Same physical category — vacuum-deposited ceramic film — different chemistry, different color.

Cathodic-arc or sputter deposition of zirconium nitride. Film thickness 1–4 µm, hardness 2400–2800 HV, color characteristic pale champagne-yellow (cooler than TiN's warm gold) — band-gap ~2.6 eV. Modern decorative-PVD line carries TiN gold, ZrN champagne, CrN pewter, TiCN warm bronze, AlTiN charcoal-anthracite (near-black), AlCrN dark anthracite as color options on the same hardware platform with gas-mix changes. Where the design calls for 'modern gold' (cooler than yellow gold but warmer than pure white), ZrN is usually the spec.

character — pale champagne, cool warmth, hard, modern-luxury register.

Second life

reversibilitymoderate — plating can be stripped chemically and re-plated. PVD coatings strip with NaOH or specialty chemistry; electroplated layers strip similarly.
blocks substrate recyclingno
renewabilityshop-renewable — strip-and-re-plate is the canonical path for restoring worn plating. Common services are bumper rechromers, watch-case re-platers, and PVD re-coaters (Oerlikon, IonBond).
