Stainless Steel 304

austenitic stainless steel · 304 stainless, 18/8 stainless, AISI 304, A2 stainless
metallic 0.00
hue shift +0°

The everyday stainless. Sinks, water bottles, kitchen tools, hardware in any environment that gets wet or salty. Won't rust under normal conditions, polishes to a mirror, takes welding well. Tougher to machine than mild steel — work-hardens fast.

Austenitic chromium-nickel stainless (~18% Cr, 8% Ni). Non-magnetic in annealed state, becomes weakly magnetic when cold-worked. Excellent corrosion resistance in most non-chloride environments. Common architectural and food-contact grade.

Sustainability

  • embodied carbon kg co2e per kg6.15
  • sourceEditorial estimate from ICE / Granta CES EduPack class databases — industry mean, with cradle-to-gate boundary unless otherwise noted. Embodied carbon for any specific product depends on supplier mix, recycled content, and energy grid; verify against a primary source before using these numbers in a sustainability claim.
  • embodied carbon recycled kg co2e per kg1.55
  • recyclabilityvery high — nickel content makes scrap valuable; nearly closed-loop in industrial channels
  • biodegradableFalse
